Subject: Hyde Park Barracks was built on the instruction of Governor Macquarie between 1817 and 1819. He saw the desirablilty of some secure night lodging for government assigned male convicts for surveillance and as a means to control their labour.

Subject: It is a three storey sandstock brick, gabled former convict barracks of Georgian style. It has sandstone foundations, sills and string courses while the pedimented gable is decorated by a shaped stone panel containing an early colonial clock.
